Less well known than Michael Apted’s 7-Up! collection of biographical documentaries but equally astonishing and entertaining in their scope and achievements, Gillian Armstrong’s (My Brilliant Career) five-film series has chronicled the lives of three working-class Adelaide women beginning in 1976 when the subjects were 14. This latest entry examines Kerry, Josie and Diana at age 47—with two of them being grandmothers already!

Flashing back to the beginning, Armstrong brings the uninitiated up to date on the hopes and dreams and various vicissitudes of life faced by the determined trio. Traumas (abortion, broken relationships) compete with the more uplifting aspects of their journeys to fascinating and profoundly emotional effect. For these women are not “special” in the way Hollywood might have made them, and Armstrong’s approach is definitely grounded in the nonjudgmental but thoroughly engaging exploration of the complex facts of their lives. In the end, the idea that these are “real” people shines through, and this marvelous film is all the better for it.
