Lady Grace Drummond-Hay’s reports from the 1929 first-ever trip around the world in the Graf Zeppelin were front-page news for Hearst publications. However, the diary she kept as the only woman on this historic journey, tells a tale of unrequited love and heartbreak. In the small window of peace between the world wars, the voyage, ostensibly a symbol of hope and progress, encounters difficulties with a changing Europe. Spectacular footage of the journey from New York, across Europe, Siberia and the Pacific, shows us funeral wreaths thrown from the Zeppelin over Verdun, riots in Berlin, and the rise of Communism in Russia.

Thirteen years in the making, what started out as an ode to the industrial age, reveals itself as a beautiful and tender love story in this magnificent work compiled from archival footage, and given voice by Lady Drummond-Hay’s own diaries. While the mechanics of keeping this massive dirigible in the air are mystifying enough, and the sweeping views just breathtaking, it is the voice of the narrator that really carries the drama as we hear of her futile struggle with her feelings for a past lover (journalist Karl von Wiegand) who is now shipmate, supervisor and married man.
