An emotionally loaded road movie that touches on some sensitive and deeply felt issues, Travis Fine’s drama features Melissa Leo in a career-defining role. She plays Montine, an acerbic and alcoholic flight attendant on the verge of being dismissed for her quick fuse, who finds herself in mid-air on September 11, 2001. After her plane is grounded, she must care for an UM (“unaccompanied minor”) onboard—a 10-year-old Muslim boy named Omar (Anthony Keyvan, thankfully eschewing the sentimental/precocious youngster bit).

As Montine finds her initial frostiness melted by Omar’s decency, and when she learns that his father worked at the World Trade Center, she decides to ditch her job and take the boy by car to New York to discover his father’s fate. Fine—who also wrote the script—manages quite a feat here: he deals with material that might easily have become maudlin with intelligence, and offers some pointed comments on post 9/11 America along the way. And he couches his narrative in that most elusive of post 9/11 emotions: hope.
