Brazil’s submission to the Academy for Best Foreign Film consideration chronicles the arduous journey of a penniless child of the slums to a man on the brink of greatness. Adapted from Denise Parana’s biography of the same name, “Lula” is Fabio Barreto’s sweeping tribute to Luis Inacio “Lula” da Silva, who rose from the poverty of northeastern Brazil to the presidency of the fifth most populous nation in the world.

When Lula’s alcoholic father abandons his seven children and heroic wife, the boy must scrape by in a forbidding São Paulo, toiling at the dirtiest jobs, working his way through school, before emerging as a union organizer and later leader of the country. As the young Lula follows his Brazilian Horatio Alger trajectory, his mother remains his greatest supporter and emotional anchor. Her hardscrabble life and struggle to support seven children make her the sentimental focus of the film.
