Flora, an elderly spinster, who spent her life raising her orphaned nieces, fears being left alone in her old age, and therefore proposes an unorthodox arrangement–marriage--with her maid, Purita, in the hope that she will be guaranteed a caretaker for the rest of her days. However, in a characteristic plot twist of this darkly humorous tale, Flora gains more than she bargains for in the form of Purita’s estranged siblings and an ailing mother. The bonds of family prove stronger than those of commerce, and the ailing mother is moved into Flora’s house, where the two wily old women engage in a battle for attention through crafty manipulation and an increasingly exaggerated show of self sacrifice.

Set in rural Spain, this bittersweet but comedic tale is peppered with plot twists and bolstered by great performances especially Petra Martínez as the acerbic Flora the excellent Adriana Ozores as the seemingly simple-minded Purita. Despite the comic situations, we get a keen insight to the fears and apprehensions we all face as we grow old and infirm.
