A deeply moving surprise from Peru that combines elements of Latin magic realism with a nuanced and beautifully realized romance, Javier Fuentes-León’s lovely film is sure to jerk some tears. In a coastal village, fisherman Miguel is seemingly happily married to the very pregnant Mariela. He is, however, carrying on a necessarily (in more ways than one) hidden romance with the urbane newcomer Santiago.
When Santiago dies unexpectedly, it seems a tragedy—until he returns as a ghost and Miguel realizes that he can now openly stroll through the village with his lover, given no one else can see him…. Fuentes-León renders what could easily seem silly as a completely believable and touching fable/allegory about love, tolerance, betrayal, and the need for understanding. Gentle in its approach to such important topics, the sexy Undertow carves out a space for itself as a bittersweet tale sure to strike a chord with audiences everywhere. Winner, Audience Award, World Cinema, Sundance Film Festival.
