In C. Scott Willis’ brilliant documentary, when Betty Woodman says, “We represented a family in which art was a very high priority,” you might think that nothing is out of the ordinary. But when you learn that Francesca Woodman, the youngest member of this family of professional artists, and herself a striving and talented artist, committed suicide at the age of 22, the sentence takes on an altogether darker and more ambiguous cast. What on the surface could be any nuclear family, turns out to be anything but-- mother Betty is a highly sought after ceramicist, father George is a painter, and brother Charles is a video artist.

Relying on Francesca’s probing and poetical diary entries to provide the narrative backbone of the film, Willis also introduces us to the stunning power of Francesca’s photography and video art. She was clearly an artist of provocative originality and technical superiority, whose loss is felt not only by the family, but by the world at large. Willis’ sensitive and unflinching approach produces a documentary that is every bit as extraordinary as the family it presents.
