Director Peter Weir is known for films such as The Year of Living Dangerously, Witness and The Truman Show that challenge his protagonists and their everyday lives with extreme situations. With his latest effort, the unflinching epic The Way Back, Weir confirms his status as a master filmmaker. Adapted from Slavomir Rawicz’s book, the narrative unfolds during Stalin’s reign of terror, beginning in a Polish interrogation center. We are introduced to the unlikely protagonist, idealistic Pole Janusz (wonderfully portrayed by young talent Jim Sturgess), who is whisked away to a Siberian labor camp where suspected political dissidents and brutal criminals fight daily to survive inhumane conditions.

At the camp we meet the individuals we’ll follow on a dangerous death defying escape that leads to an arduous journey out of snow-covered Russia, across the deserts of Mongolia, the Great Wall of China and, ultimately, over the Himalayas into India. Ed Harris shines as the misanthropic American and Colin Farrell shares the limelight as a wily Russian thug. The Way Back is a quietly profound opus that confirms Peter Weir’s unwavering vision and brilliance, as well as the notion that he is the David Lean of our time.
