USA, 2010, 89 Minute Running Time
Topics: Coming of Age, Documentary, History, Jewish Interest, Political, Religion, Woman Director, Women
Program: True Stories
Language: English English Sub-Titles

In July 2002, 22 Palestinian and Israeli teenage girls traveled to the U.S. to participate in a leadership program called Building Bridges for Peace. My So-Called Enemy centers on six of these intelligent, articulate girls and how the transformative experience of knowing their "enemies" as human beings meets with the realities of their lives at home in the Middle East over the next seven years.

Not only does the film show the humanity and complexities of the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, but it is also a coming-of-age story. While it speaks to the power of individual narratives to open hearts and minds, and, importantly, to create the space for inclusive dialogue, it also illustrates the important role of women in building peaceful communities. An ideal companion piece to Precious Life, also playing in our True Stories section, My So-Called Enemy won the prize for Best Conflict and Resolution Film at the Hamptons Film Festival and a Special Jury Prize at the Denver Film Festival.
