Set against the backdrop of today's collapsing rural economy in Mexico Circo examines the life, tradition and hardships of the Ponce family who runs a traveling circus. The members of the family grapple with the difficult choice to continue their century-old family tradition or seek a better life, especially for their children, outside the circus. While documenting the strenuous regimen of the circus life, the film also peels back the curtain on the Ponce family’s inner dynamics, revealing generational divides and money worries that threaten to tear apart the family fabric. With the spirit of a road movie Circo is an intimate portrait of a family making a living from their sweat, artistry, wit, and tenacity while exploring the universal themes of family loyalty and cultural heritage.
Director-cinematographer Aaron Schock’s bittersweet documentary achieves an exact mix of humor and pathos that makes it a rare feast. The film's expressive visuals complemented by the evocative score by musical group Calexico effectively hint at the sadness that exists just below the seemingly cheerful surface of the big top.
