Powerful and shocking by turns, Gabriel Range’s latest film dramatizes a much under-reported story—that of modern-day slaves, living and working as virtual prisoners in some of the West’s largest cities. Wunmi Mosaku gives a soul-stirring performance as Malia, a young Sudanese woman living in the Nuba Mountains with her respected father (Issach de Bankole). During a raid, she is captured by militants, sold into slavery and shipped to Khartoum, where she is forced to serve a cruel matron (Hiam Abbass). At 18, she is stripped of her passport and smuggled to London in order to go into servitude as an unpaid prisoner-worker for the matron’s cousin. A way of escape becomes essential for the increasingly desperate Malia….
Such melodramatic circumstances call for a delicate touch and director Range brings just the right amount of subtlety to this tale, introducing surprising plot turns in a completely believable way. In this, he is aided by screenwriter Jeremy Brock (The Last King of Scotland) and, especially by Mosaku. She brings a powerful, deeply moving humanity to what is an unforgettable portrayal.
