United Kingdom, 2010, 90 Minute Running Time
Topics: Art/Architecture/Film, Biopic, Documentary
Program: True Stories
Language: English

Cameraman is a terrific celebration of one of Britain’s true film heroes, and anyone with even a passing interest in the history of film will find this to be an absolute treat. Jack Cardiff, who died in 2009, rose through the ranks after brief stints as film extra, clapper boy and camera operator to become one of the all-time greats in the art of cinematography, eventually receiving the first ever Honorary Academy Award for work in this field, 54 years after his first in 1947 for Black Narcissus.

Equally at home with such masters as Powell & Pressburger and John Huston as with blockbusters (he shot the first Rambo), Cardiff is also revealed as a first class raconteur with a definite eye for the ladies, having contributed to the on-screen immortality of the likes of Marlene Dietrich, Ava Gardner, Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall and Audrey Hepburn with his luminescent photography. Liberally stuffed with testimonies from famous admirers (including long-time fan Martin Scorsese, who attributes Cardiff’s work on The Red Shoes as the inspiration for his own epoch-making Raging Bull), this affectionate and insightful documentary is a delight from start to end and sure to leave the viewer wanting more.
