The success of the World Cup in South Africa reflected the growing desires and dreams of many nations on that continent, desires and dreams that are increasingly showing up on cinema screens in the West. Debs Gardner-Paterson’s energetic and youthful road movie is a perfect example—gone are the doom-laden prognostications on Africa’s future and in their place are the welcome additions of hope and exuberance.

Young Fabrice, a budding Rwandan soccer player, conscripts his quick-witted and wisecracking buddy Dudu to defy the wishes of Fabrice’s mother and hit the road for the 3,000-mile trip to South Africa and the soccer magic that waits there. Having the boys lose their way in the Congo before running into a child-army deserter and then a young girl enslaved as a prostitute, Gardner-Paterson and screenwriter Rhidian Brook’s don’t whitewash the problems faced by modern Africans. But with the winning characters of Fabrice and Dudu, they show that things are changing fast while crafting a supremely entertaining film in the process.
