The Man From Nowhere
South Korea, 2010, 119 Minute Running Time
Topics: Action/Adventure, Crime, Drama, Gangster, Thriller
Program: World Cinema Now
Language: Korean English Sub-Titles

Korea’s 2010 box office champion, this dynamic thriller transforms local heartthrob Won Bin (the son in Mother, PSIFF 2010) into an action hero. It’s a fast-paced, blood-soaked tale about a mystery man who gets caught up in a gang war while trying to protect a child, recalling Luc Besson's The Professional.

Tae-shik (Won), a bedraggled stranger with a mysterious past, works as a pawnbroker while living in a rundown basement in a Seoul slum. Going by the name "a-jeo-ssi" (Korean for "Mister"), the man avoids the junkies and deadbeats who inhabit his building, but has a soft spot for his street-smart young neighbor So-mi (Kim Sae-ron, the heroine of A Brand New Life, PSIFF 2010), who often visits him to escape her violent home life. When So-mi is kidnapped by the mob, along with her drug-addicted exotic-dancer mother, Tae-shik has no choice but to come out from hiding and fight the criminals in order to save her life. Be forewarned, the breathless, often violent action is not for the faint of heart, but genre fans will find many delights.
