If you enjoyed the deadpan dramedy of the Uruguayan film Whisky a few years back, don’t miss this bittersweet tale of a hard-hearted moneylender, a lonely spinster and the cutest-ever abandoned baby. Rendered in a brilliantly controlled expressionist style with a restrained emotional palette and numerous smartly handled running gags, October nabbed the jury prize of the Cannes Film Festival’s “Un Certain Regard” section.

Silent, morose loan shark Clement relates to his neighbors by lending them small amounts of money. He relates to women the same way, by paying for the no-talk, no-commitment services of a local brothel. His gray, cheerless existence is suddenly turned upside down when one of the hookers leaves him a baby in a basket and disappears. Meanwhile, neighbor Sofia sees a chance to change her life. With the excuse of taking care of the baby, she moves into Clemente’s run-down dump of an apartment, and slowly insinuates herself into surrogate wife status. In one of the year’s most promising feature debuts, the Diego brothers exhibit droll warmth toward their benighted characters.
