Much-venerated veterans Bruno Ganz and Senta Berger are a delight to behold in Sophie Heldman’s debut drama, an intimate and affecting tale about aging, the bonds and boundaries of love, and life’s finite nature. Based on the true story of friends of Heldman’s, Colors sketches an initially sunny tale of Fred (Ganz) and Anita (Berger), happily married for 50 years and living a well-to-do suburban life.

Anita spends a lot of time in their lovely garden while Fred—despite being retired—still goes into his old office. The fly in the ointment is Fred’s diagnosis of prostate cancer, for which he has decided to forego treatment (not least because of his worries that erectile dysfunction will most likely be a side effect). When Fred buys an apartment in the city where he can be alone and “think,” Anita reacts—and what follows is a heartfelt rumination on the subjects of love and existence that is universal in its implications.
