Alternately funny and emotionally laden—but never sentimental—Yu-Hsiu Camille Chen’s brilliantly written (by her) debut feature is a hyper realistic family tale focusing on the relationship between mother Susan (Nicola Bartlett, in a towering performance) and her three grown daughters: Nina Anna, and Christine. Susan is dying of cancer and over the course of one Christmas season she and her daughters—husband/father James is present, but baffled and emotionally distant—must come to terms with Susan’s impending demise.

What Chen does so brilliantly is sketch out the family dynamics with unerring precision, capturing the humor and the tensions inherent to family life, especially one wherein the matriarch—worried about the fates of her daughters—is not long for this world. What could be, in lesser hands, depressing comes off as a life-affirming and profoundly moving drama of intimate moments beautifully acted and rendered with acute insight.
