Exploring the lives of immigrants who find themselves torn between two lands and cultures, with roots in neither, this messy, moving and joyous romantic drama introduces a trio of Turkish brothers living in Belgium who redefine family dynamics after their father's death. While two of the siblings embody the opposite poles of assimilation, director/writer Balci concentrates on the middle son and his love affair with a perky Flemish blonde, charting a search for cultural equilibrium. Love, hypocrisy, a brass band and other fabulous culturally cross-pollinated music feature prominently.
Eldest brother Ediz represents his late father's patriarchal authoritarian ways, discouraging his wife from learning Dutch while he himself revives an affair with a Flemish former flame. The youngest brother, adolescent Bora, is too ready to conform--technologically addicted and prone to whatever mischief his assorted delinquent pals dream up. Meanwhile, art museum guard and trumpet player Timur (played by the director’s brother) strikes a perfect balance between honoring his heritage and opening his mind to his adoptive country. A disarmingly honest chronicle of a Turkish family’s life in Ghent … Turkish for beginners!
