A pitch-perfect comedy on a hot-button issue, John Jeffcoat’s feature debut signals a bright new talent in the ranks of American independent filmmakers. Todd (Josh Hamilton) heads up the sales department in a Seattle-based company that sells cheap novelty products. After his entire department is outsourced, he succeeds in hanging on to his job only by agreeing to go to India to train his own replacement.
Completely at sea in the climate and culture, and rattled by the locals’ invariable mispronunciation of his name as “Mr. Toad,” his bemusement is matched by the young Indian workers in the company’s Mumbai office, who fail to understand why anyone would want the worthless products they are being trained to purvey. Rescue is at hand in the shape of the beautiful and capable Asha, who shows him that he needs to learn about India to know how to motivate his workers. Naturally, love rears its inevitable head as Todd and Asha bury their cultural differences.
The prevalence of outsourcing in the modern work place provides rich pickings for cross-cultural comedy, but mercifully Jeffcoat and co-writer George Wing (50 First Dates) eschew the obvious stereotypes with real warmth and charm to make Outsourced a genuine crowd-pleasure, with winning performances and an agile plot that keeps the audience guessing.
