Under the guidance of Buddhist spiritual leader, His Holiness Galwang Drupka, 700 people of all ages, including a group of Kung Fu nuns, trekked 450 miles across the Himalayas, through blizzards and mudslides, at altitudes above 17,000 feet, to bring awareness to the massive environmental problems caused by global warming.

Referred to as the third pole because of the number of glaciers it holds, the Himalayas supply drinking water to 1.5 billion people. But with rising temperatures, increased plastic waste and no infrastructure for recycling the future is uncertain.

Enduring illness, injury, and hunger, the trekkers go to villages only accessible on foot to educate the locals on environmental preservation, planting 33,000 trees on remote slopes, and emerging at the end of the trip with nearly half a ton of plastic litter strapped to their back. The entire journey was captured on film by a Ladakhi monk using a solar powered camera.

This unprecedented environmental action, never before seen in the Himalayas, has become an annual pilgrimage, with subsequent Pad Yatra events in Mumbai and Sri Lanka.
