Many have pointed out the superficial affinities between John Landis’s Trading Places and Kenji Uchida’s deliriously funny identity-swap comedy, but would Landis ever have thought to make his odd-couple a hapless actor and an in-trouble-with-the-mob professional killer? That’s what Uchida does and the resulting madcap mayhem makes for a perfectly scripted and meticulously executed (ahem) gem.

Through a delicious series of events, Sakurai (Masato Sakai), past his youth, still single and a washout as a thespian, leaps at the chance to assume the identity of another man, Kondo (Teruyuki Kagawa), injured at the bathhouse both were frequenting. Sakurai, unfortunately, has no way of knowing that Kondo is wanted by the mob. For his part, Kondo awakens in hospital as an amnesiac, logically assuming that he is what his ID makes him out to be: a bad actor named Sakurai... Throw in another delectable subplot involving potty magazine editor Kanae (Ryoko Hirosue), who’s set a deadline for finding a husband, and you have the ingredients for a very tasty, very funny comic stew.
