A largely unknown treasure of American culture, Robert Beck, aka Iceberg Slim, came from nothing in Depression-era Chicago to become one of the best selling and most authentic voices of inner city street life in the 20th Century.

Growing up in dire poverty, Beck was abused as a child, abandoned by his mother, and became a small-time criminal, eventually molding his identity into that of a pimp. Getting out of prison at age 42, Beck vowed to change his life. The result was the bestselling Iceberg Slim: Life of a Pimp and six other hugely successful books.

Beck’s legacy is vast: his works are considered to be the genesis of blaxploitation movies and gangster rap. A roster including comedian Chris Rock, rappers Ice-T and Snoop Dogg, and producer Quincy Jones testifies to his influence on their lives. The true scene-stealers, however, are Beck’s wives and daughters. Their memories are vivid, if not always in sync with each other, adding richly personal and emotional layers to this impressive directorial debut by Jorge Hinojosa.

Director Jorge Hinojosa expected to attend both screenings
