This topical thriller follows the disappearance of a young woman in Damascus, Syria. Now living in Toronto, her father Adib (Alexander Siddig) is determined to find her, but his search is complicated by his own dubious status in the eyes of the Assad regime. Crossing over the border incognito he enlists help from an old girlfriend (Marisa Tomei) and a suspicious embassy official (Joshua Jackson).

On the face of it, this would seem an unexpected change of pace from Montreal-born director Ruba Nadda after the success of her acclaimed love story, Cairo Time (2009), but it comes from political conviction and personal experience: as a teenager, she lived on and off in Damascus for four years, so she’s all too familiar with the realities of a police state.

“It’s steeped in my bones: the paranoia and the danger, and everyone’s watching you, and everyone’s going to turn you,” Nadda says. “It just seeped through my filmmaking with this movie.”
