Nineteen-year-old Mwas has always dreamed of being an actor. He makes a meager living selling knock-off films in his rural village but the urge to make his dreams a reality is strong and he leaves to pursue acting in Nairobi. The reality of city life hits hard when he is robbed of everything he has within minutes of stepping off the bus. In order to survive, Mwas joins a band of criminals to make a dangerous living on the streets while simultaneously landing a role in a local play with a prestigious acting troupe. Mwas must now reconcile his precarious criminal life with his hunger for life on the stage.

Balancing a gritty plot with crisply stylized visuals and a likeable lead character, this Kenyan entry for the Academy Award marks a dynamic directorial debut for David Gitonga – working here under the tutelage of Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run; Cloud Atlas).

“Fundamentally honest and vividly realistic.” Todd McCarthy, Hollywood Reporter
