Partially set in a Mormon community so willfully blind to modernity that a tape recorder is an object of fascination for 15-year-old Rachel (the luminous Julia Garner, first seen in Martha Marcy May Marlene), Rebecca Thomas’s even-handed coming-of-age tale adroitly blends a touch of magic realism with the grunge of the real world to beguiling effect.

At 15, Rachel is interviewed on tape, as custom dictates, by her pastor-father (Billy Zane). Discovering a lone cassette in the family’s basement, she plays it and becomes entranced by what she hears — a cover of Blondie’s Hangin’ on the Telephone. When she is found to be pregnant, she blames the voice on the tape... In short order, she and her brother are on the road to Las Vegas where the modern world opens her not-quite-so-naïve eyes. “Thomas directs with such blithe grace and elegant pacing… [It’s] Garner, however, [who] represents the pic’s real secret weapon… [T]he young thesp, with her blond curls and wide-set, intelligent eyes, is simply magnetic throughout.” Leslie Felperin, Variety.
