Twelve-year-old Simon has hit on a grand scam. For the price of a season’s lift pass, he has access to some of the best alpine skiing in Switzerland – and to other people’s skis, gloves and goggles too, anything he can pick up quick and easy while the rightful owner is taking a break. The small stuff he stashes in his backpack. The skis he humps back down the mountain when he can.

Why does he do this? For money, he explains. “To eat.” And in this he’s truthful. He lives alone with his unreliable older sister (Léa Sedoux) in a rented apartment they can barely afford. It’s not a lifestyle that’s built to last.

Photographed with unobtrusive finesse by Agnes Godard, Ursula Meier’s impressive and affecting film is authentic in every detail, even as it maps out the dangerous rocky passes between adults and children, the haves and have-nots. Played with a very moving combination of enterprise, determination and fragility by Kacey Mottet Klein, Simon will melt even the hardest heart.
