Eighteen-year-old Shira is the youngest daughter of an Orthodox Hassidic family in Tel Aviv. She is about to be engaged to a promising young man of the same age and background. But on Purim, her 28-year-old sister Esther dies while giving birth to her first child. As pain and grief overwhelm the family, Shira’s match is postponed.
Everything changes when Esther’s late husband receives an offer to marry a widow from Belgium. Fearing losing her only grandchild, Esther and Shira’s mother proposes he marry Shira instead.
Born to a secular family in New York, director Burshtein adopted the strict Hassidic codes governing life and worship shortly after she graduated from film school. In this, her first film, she explores haredi life from within.
“An enthralling, stirring tale of a Hasidic woman’s adventures in matchmaking […] directed with a sure, delicate touch and great intimacy by Rama Burshtein […] Unabashedly sexy but chaste scenes make this a festival must-see.” Manohla Dargis, New York Times
