Before Tomi Ungerer, children’s books didn’t feature heroic characters like Crictor, a boa constrictor. A snake in a children’s book? Forget about it. None other than Maurice Sendak himself says that Where the Wild Things Are would not have happened without Ungerer’s inspired and path-breaking work. And yet, even though he was successful almost immediately upon his arrival in New York in 1957, Tomi Ungerer is far from being a household name.

Ungerer’s incredible journey and dizzying up-and-down-and-all-around career has taken him from the Nazi-occupied Alsace region of France, to the art/advertising/publishing mecca of New York, to the front lines of the anti-Vietnam War movement, to an isolated outpost in Nova Scotia, and, finally, to Irish shores. The film creatively intersperses interviews (the enigmatic and charismatic Ungerer and such luminaries as Sendak and Jules Feiffer) with expressive animated sequences, through which Ungerer’s fascinating stories come to life.

His publisher once called Tomi Ungerer, “the most famous children’s book author you have never heard of.” After this gorgeous, seductive and satisfying documentary that should change for good.
