Highly acclaimed, but also very controversial, Kim Ki-duk is one of the most contentious figures in world cinema. The very tough first half of Pieta will offend some, but it sets the groundwork for a profound psychological study that others will find transcendent.

This is the story of Kang-do, a merciless collector for a loan shark. One day, a mysterious woman claiming to be the mother who had abandoned him as a baby shows up on his doorstep. No matter how many cruel tests he inflicts on her, she continues to look at him adoringly. Kang-do gradually falls under her spell and starts to show signs of vulnerability, until she becomes the most important part of his life.

This brilliant, much talked-about film suggests themes of love, hope and ultimately salvation. In the director’s own words, “Although the film starts with violence and cruelty, it purifies the sins with forgiveness and salvation that lies inside humans.”
