Returning to the social upheaval of the 60s that fueled his superb The Best of Youth, Marco Tullio Giordana fashions a meticulous and keenly observed conspiracy thriller based on a real-life landmark case in Italy’s political history – the 1969 terrorist bombing of a bank in Milan’s Piazza Fontana that killed 17 people.

In the aftermath of the bombing, investigator Luigi Calabresi (the excellent Valerio Mastandrea), an expert on anarchist groups, begins to pull in suspects, including the pacifistic anarchist Giuseppe Pinelli (Pierfrancesco Favino). Calabresi leaves the interrogation room and moments later Pinelli is dead, having “fallen” from the fourth floor window. The cop doesn’t buy the official story and begins an investigation that leads down the corridors of power, where hints of right-wing involvement and possible CIA complicity come to light… Sticking closely to the facts of the long-running investigation (charges and dismissals were still be bandied about in 2005), Giordana’s engrossing tale of power and duplicity is a knockout.
