Last year Danielle Arbid, director of In the Battlefield (Lebanon/France/Belgium), received the award. The John Schlesinger Award for Outstanding First Feature or Documentary that acknowledges the work of a first-time filmmaker whose narrative or documentary feature will also be presented at the Festival. Last year Jesse Acevedo, director of Everything Blue (Brazil/Mexico), received the award. A special jury of international critics will once again convene at the Palm Springs International Film Festival to deliberate and present the prestigious FIPRESCI Award for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year and Best Actor and Actress prizes from the Awards Buzz category. The International Filmmaker Award will be presented to Pupi Avati. The festival's prestigious annual Black Tie Awards Gala presentation will honor contenders for the 2006 Academy Awards.
