film synopsis
As a young woman, Teresa moved from her native Chile to Buenos Aires to work as a maid and help raise another family’s son. Now in her 50s, Teresa (masterfully portrayed by Paulina Garcia, much-lauded for her titular role in Gloria, PSIFF 2014) finds herself facing a most unexpected change in life: no longer able to afford her help, Teresa’s “family” has arranged for a new job for her on the other side of the country. Teresa is reluctant to undertake the journey across Argentina’s arid plains, her anxiety made worse when her bus breaks down in a small desert community dedicated to the mythical saint La Difunta Correa, protector of travelers. A chance encounter with lively traveling salesman El Gringo—and a forgotten bag—leads Teresa on a surprising detour across the desert landscape, and closer to the heart of who she really is, in this touching and acclaimed debut feature from writer/directors Cecilia Atán and Valeria Pivato.
