Something isn’t right in rural Quebec. The formerly self-reliant locals have developed a 1,000-yard stare and a taste for human flesh. The cause remains a mystery and it’s every man for himself for the survivors, scattered among abandoned neighborhoods, farms and woodlands. Capable and adaptable Bonin (Marc-André Grondin) and his buddy Vezina crack off-color jokes while patrolling the endless forests for the afflicted. Independent Celine, still clad in pearls and a silk blouse, lures individual zombies to the wrath of her machete, while Tania inexplicably totes her accordion where others sling their rifles. Limited resources cause the survivors’ paths to cross, forming an uneasy alliance born of desperation as the zombies’ behavior becomes increasingly unpredictable.
A completely absorbing film whose roots run far deeper than the average story of the undead, Ravenous sneaks in sly moments of humor alongside classically creepy imagery, enhanced by an unsettling score and eerie sound design.
