A group of Swazi orphan children collaborate to tell a story drawn from their collective memories. From their imaginations comes Liyana, a fictional girl who embarks on a journey to rescue her younger twin brothers. Through the character of Liyana the children allow themselves to delve into the dark places in their memories. Guided by anti-apartheid activist and renowned storyteller Gcina Mhlophe and brought to life through beautiful animation by artist Shofela Coker, Liyana refuses to give into bleakness, instead bringing forth a heartwarming tale of perseverance and inner strength from the imaginations of children. The spirit of collaboration resonates through the film, from the talented and charming presence of the children onscreen to the people behind the camera. Executive produced by Thandie Newton and handled with sensitivity and care by directing duo, Aaron and Amanda Kopp, Liyana is a visually stunning and unforgettable account of the power of storytelling and the transformative nature of hope.
