film synopsis
Her rain-soaked face evincing both fear and hope, physician Malena (Bárbara Lennie, The Skin I Live In) makes her way through the streets of Buenos Aires en route to Argentina’s Misiones province. There, in a remote rural hospital, impoverished surrogate mother Marcela (Yanina Avila in an astounding debut) is about to give birth to the child Malena has arranged to adopt. But Malena’s moment of joy quickly becomes a nightmare when Marcela’s tragedy-stricken family breaks from their prearranged agreement with the successful doctor and demands a substantial additional payment to release the child. Shock, confusion and rage soon turn to panic as Malena realizes the seriousness of the demands, scrambling to come up with the funds and sending her deep into the hard realities of class, motherhood and an uncaring legal system in this unforgettable new film from Diego Lerman, one of the brightest lights of New Argentinian Cinema.
