A complex, cerebral and captivating courtroom drama from Hirokazu Kore-eda (Still Walking; Like Father, Like Son). Misumi has a criminal history, having killed two loan sharks 30 years ago. He now finds himself in the spotlight again, accused of murdering his employer. While it looks like an open and shut case since Misumi has confessed to the charges, his prominent lawyer, Shigemori, harbors new ideas which could mean the difference between life and death for his client.
Once Shigemori starts digging, however, the evidence is no longer obvious. Misumi not only refuses to reveal what happened but keeps changing his story. And Sakie, the daughter of the murdered man, may holds the secret to the case. Driven to find out the truth, Shigemori can’t help but wonder if Misumi is guilty after all.
With The Third Murder, Kore-eda departs from his usual family dramas, taking on new challenges while posing serious questions about whether anyone should have control over another person’s life.
