film synopsis

Redolent of The Godfather and The Sopranos with a soupçon of Animal Kingdom and a welcome dose of black humor, this entertaining, fast-paced crime thriller is set on the lawless border of the Slovak Republic and Ukraine, prior to Slovakia’s 2007 accession to the European Union.

As the head of an organized crime family, Adam is busy balancing his business dealing contraband in the borderlands with personal concerns, like his daughter’s upcoming wedding. The film’s title refers not only to changing physical boundaries that threaten his livelihood, but also to the moral lines that Adam feels he must not cross in his efforts to keep his two worlds separate.

Impressive performances abound, in particular, an extremely physical turn from Slovak theater and TV star Tomáš Maštalír as lead character Adam. Hang on for a wild ride as the smart, twisty screenplay continually brings more characters and complications into the mix.

Winner: Best Director, Karlovy Vary

In competition for the FIPRESCI Prize.
