Cannes’ Best Actress award-winner Diane Kruger stars as Katia, a grief-stricken mother confronting the horrors of mankind when her husband and son are brutally murdered in a targeted, hate-fueled bombing on the streets of Germany. The once strong, loving mother is bombarded with baseless, bigoted accusations from the media—and her own parents—about her Kurdish husband’s assumed terrorist associations. Retreating into a self-medicated haze, Katia is numb to those around her; only coming up for air when the white supremacists responsible for the murder are apprehended. Although she astutely navigates the impassive German judicial system, Katia must take matters into her own hands if she is to achieve justice for her loved ones. This taut thriller delivers heart-pounding scene after scene as co-writer/director Fatih Akin (Head-On) masterfully confronts a disconcerting growing sentiment of nationalism in European countries and exposes the results of such dangerous thinking.
